http://live.pirillo.com/ - A user in the chat room wanted to know how Ponzi, Chis, and Wicket burned off excess calories.

Chris uses the Tony Little Gazelle, and he just got the Gazelle Power Plus - a very low impact glider. Combining the glider with the Xbox 360 for 40 to 60 minutes per day allows Chris to lose and maintain his weight.

If you want more information on how Chris stays in shape, check out his weight loss tips.

This week at the Health Hacks Podcast, Jason White of StrengthCast (www.strengthradio.com) wants to remind you that you aren’t doing yourself any favors by replacing the sugar in your coffee with honey: This little talk explores a very important distinction in dieting: Is natural sugar better for you than processed sugar like the kind found in Soda? A lot of people make the mistake of trying a no sugar diet and they go crazy on the fruit No sugar means NO sugar. Next up we have our newest contributor, Heather Moreno, ACSM. Heather is the founder of PeopleFitUSA.com and the author of the book Achieving Physical Wealth: 8 Simple Steps for Breaking The Rules of Staying Fit [Amazon]. So please share your thoughts on the differing viewpoints expressed in today’s show. We’d love to hear what YOU have to say! For a partial transcript, please click the following link. Transcript of Ditch the Diet pt. 1 by Heather Moreno: Ditch the Diet and still lose weight. Pt. 1: Do not Deprive yourself In the quest for weight loss most people turn to diets, but overall diets have a dismal 2-5% success rate. Yes, people lose weight, but most often they put it back on and then some. In this series I will show you that you can ditch the diet and still lose weight. In this segment I will focus on a phenomenon that experts refer to as Diet Deprivation Backlash. Heres how it works. Diets give a small list of good or allowable foods that dieters are encouraged to eat, and then they produce a long list of bad foods that must be minimized or avoided all together if the diet is to work. The problem is that placing good and bad judgment on foods causes dieters to restrict the so-called bad foods, usually the foods they enjoy the most. Judging foods as bad and then depriving yourself of them, leads to first restricting then ultimately to over-eating (or binging on) the bad foods. Follow it through with me. If you plan to start a diet Monday (because of course thats when all diets start) what will you do the days leading up to your diet? Most likely, you will eat all of the bad foods that you are supposed to avoid on your diet. This is what is referred to as last supper eating. Then Monday comes and your diet starts. You deprive yourself of your favorite foods opting instead for the allowable ones, possibly even counting points or calories. Now, the rare person (that 2-5% of the population) may be able to maintain the diet indefinitely. But for the other 95-98% of us, the diet may only last a few days, weeks, or if were real sadists, a few months. That is because as human beings, we do not take kindly to deprivation. The more you tell someone they cant have a certain food, the more they want to eat it. Its like telling a kid dont touch that ” what do they do? They touch the very thing you told them not to. Maybe its the little kid in us that says I want it, and I want it now. But maybe, just maybe, were not meant to live that way. But whatever the reason, were off the diet. Now, when you go off the diet, do you think to yourself, Oh wonderful, I can now have that scoop of ice cream Ive been craving? Or, fill in the blanks with your favorite bad food. Most likely, you go far beyond a simple scoop of ice cream to the entire carton, a large pizza, a bottle of wine the post-diet binge is your chance to make up for all those days of deprivation. But there is something else driving the post-diet eating extravaganza. In the back of the dieters mind is that thought that he or she needs to go on another diet again. The party cant last and it will time to be good all over again. The little voice in their head says, enjoy now before you cant. Pretty soon the dieter is again promising herself that shell start Monday. This pattern of binge-restrict ultimately leads to feelings of guilt, self-loathing, and weight gain. Dieters tend to mentally beat themselves up, and feel like failures. As a result, they tend to not trust themselves with food which is why they go back to the diet. They think that someone else knows better than they do ” they just need to buckle down, muster up the will power, and next time they will be successful. But we already know the success rate of diets does not give them much hope. But what if we simply suspended our good food-bad food judgments and looked at all foods as being fair game? What might happen? Many people think that this license to eat is a binge waiting to happen. Or they think that they would never eat healthy foods, for example fruits and vegetables. But when they give themselves permission to not have fruits and veggies ” eventually down the road their body will want fruits and vegetables. If you eat foods that you really dont like because theyre low in calories or healthy ” you know, the good foods, this can lead to over-eating because you fail to get satisfied with your food, even if your stomach is full. It is easy to graze on 500 or more good calories in the attempt to get satisfied whereas a 150 calorie cookie would have done the trick. Several years ago I noticed in the food diaries of one of my clients that she was eating a lot of protein bars, which was a great option for her demanding schedule. However, in those instances, her comment was that she was craving something sweet. I asked what she would rather have when she was craving sweets and she said A one ounce square of dark chocolate. I recommended that at those times she eat that one ounce square of dark chocolate, adding a piece of string cheese for protein to round out the snack. She loved it! So back to the question ” what if you suspended the good food bad food judgments? Most people need to heal their thinking before they can learn about health, by spending time undoing the damage and getting to their belief systems. Consider labeling bad foods as only those foods that you do not like or that dont make you feel good. For example, do certain foods give you a headache or a stomach ache? Are there foods that you simply hate eating? I hate chicken and asparagus ” dont ask me why, I just dont like them. While they may be good and healthy, to me theyre bad. And you know what, my health and weight have not suffered one bit by avoiding these foods. On the other hand, I love wine and chocolate and partake often. I know my limits ” when I have too much of one or the other, a headache or stomach ache will follow. Because I dont like feeling that way, I rarely over-indulge. And again, despite eating and drinking what diets may tell me are bad, my health and weight have not suffered by including these in my regular fare. I encourage you to notice any foods that dont make you feel good if you eat too much of them or eat them too often, and decide to respect your body by moderating your intake of those foods. Recognize any food that you might be forcing yourself to eat because it is healthy, and decide that there are plenty of healthy foods and life is too short not to enjoy what you eat. And lastly, identify any food that you really enjoy and no matter what label is put on that food by the diet industry, know that there is room for every food in your quest to look good and feel great. Welcome to another installment of Grasshopper New Media’s Health Hacks Podcast! Today, we’re excited to bring you a new contributor, Nathan Stanley. I’ll let Nathan introduce himself: I currently have a podcast about kettlebell lifting that can be found at www.kblifter.blogspot.com. I am a high school wrestling coach and was a small college all-american. I’m currently competing in Girevoy Sport or Kettlebell Sport (a strength endurance sport) but have a general interest in a lot of physical fitness activities from Crossfit, to kettlebells, to yoga, etc. In this episode, Nathan discusses his dietary approach to athletic training, and why everything you learned about carbo-loading may be outdated! Click below for a partial transcript of this episode. Partial Transcript: Nathan Stanley When people find out that I’m on a low carb diet, one comment I always hear is how its a great diet for losing weight, but it doesn’t give you enough energy to exercise or compete in a sport. People are stunned when I inform them that my performance has actually increased as a result of reducing carbohydrates in my diet and ensuring I am consuming enough protein. For those of you that think you can’t perform at a high level athletically and remain on a low carb diet, I’d like to share a few thoughts that I have on the subject. As a former college wrestler who competed during the 1990’s, the idea of low-fat and high carbohydrate dieting was ingrained in me from start to finish. Rice and black beans and pasta was the staple of my poorly planned in-season diet. Of course, the whole justification for this diet was based on a study of US distance runners conducted during the during the 1970’s. Anyone who knows how competitive, or uncompetitive US distance runners have been in international competition, could see the flaw in studying them as the ideal in high performance. Nevertheless, the fallacy that in order to be a high performing athlete you need to have a high intake of carbs is still entrenched in the conventional wisdom of the athletic community. As low carb/high protein diets have become more prevalent, the number of resources for athletes that want to compete with a low carb training table has grown considerably. Probably the most popular are The Paleo Diet for Athletes by Dr. Loren Cordain and the The Zone Diet by Barry Sears. Many athletic communities have embraced these meal plans not only for the reduction in body fat that many people experience, but also for the increased athletic performance they seem to foster. Although these are very popular choices, one is by no means limited to them. I myself follow a plan similar to the one outlined in the book Protein Power by Dr.s Michael and Mary Eades and have heard of many athletes that have found optimal results from a diet that consists of a higher percentage of fat and lower percentage of carbs than advocated in the Zone Diet. Here are a few things to consider when practicing a low carb diet and training for sport. First, if you are an athlete that needs to drop a few pounds, you are probably best served by accomplishing one goal at a time. If your goal is weight loss, focus on that. If your goal is increasing your muscle mass, focus on that. It is not to say that you can’t lose fat and add muscle, but you’ll want to prioritize one or the other. Often times if we don’t prioritize goals we will take part in behaviors that are counterproductive to one another. I think as a general rule of thumb for athletes, it is important to address that which is the most important first. I don’t know any great athletes who knew what the key to their success was, and then marginalized it with a conflicting goal. Next, if you’ve just started a low carb style of eating, and your first workout is sub-par for you, it’s important that you understand a few of the following points. First, you need to give your body time to adjust to the change in your diet. Eventually your body will make up for the lack of carbs in your diet by converting the excess protein to energy, but to start, it may be a little rough. Drinking lots of water will help you in your transition. Proper hydration is a priority for any athlete, but especially one who is eating a low carb diet. Finally, I’ve found that taking some potassium and magnesium seems to help prevent the cramping that some athletes have. diet, eating, exercise, fitness, health, health and fitness, livin la vida low carb, lowcarb, nutrition, physiology, Site News, workoutdiet, eating, exercise, fitness, health, health and fitness, livin la vida low carb, lowcarb, nutrition, physiology, Site News, workout
